You walk down the street, wondering what others are thinking when they look at you.
You walk into a gym, and wonder if people think you’re a dumbass because you’re trying to figure out how to squat.
You want to go to the beach, but refuse to wear anything revealing, in case someone makes “fun”.
Basically, you’ve become paranoid and paralyzed by over-thinking about the opinion of others.
If you can identify with any of the statements above, then you need to read what I’m about to tell you.
See, most of the amazing sculptures that stand today, started off life as a giant, boring piece of rock for everyone to see.
It then took an artist with a vision, months (or even years) to chisel away at it slowly until one day, we were left with a master piece. If he looked at the giant block of stone, and was worried about the judgement from others, then he’d never start.
And if he never started, we wouldn’t have sculptures to admire and derive inspiration from.
Just like the artist, you and only you have the end image in your mind of how you want to eventually look like. Every REP you do, is the chiselling away of your fat stores and the breakdown of muscle cells which will be repaired and grow back bigger, stronger.
You can’t empty all the fat cells and build huge slabs of new muscle cells in a few days – but keep at it over a certain period of time, and the person you wanted to see, will come to life right before your eyes.
Plus, if you’re a gym member then you’re paying to be there just like everyone else – so who gives a fuck what they think. You’ve got every right to be there. It’s time to quit being the pussy that you are, and hold on to that vision until it’s your reality.
Rep by rep.
There is no other way.

You’re right. It is every rep you do. One thing that really helped me break out of the “I can’t change this cycle” was starting to run in very small increments. I was 310 pounds and couldn’t run 10 seconds without being ready to give in. But slowly, I started training myself, and over the past two years, I’ve lost 140lbs and am training for a half-marathon at the end of this year.
I did it slowly in a lot of ways because of the fear that others were looking at the fat guy in the gym and how I flopped around or how little I could run. But it took a long time for me to realize that none of that mattered. They were there for the same reason I was, and that was a bond between us. We might not know each other, but at least we had that in common.
The others watching kept me FROM going two years ago, and now, it just keeps me going.

Yikes. Yeah, that is totally me. I don’t want to go outside to attempt to go jogging or even walk my dog because I’m constantly worried that someone will see me and judge me. I hate my body. I’m terrified of going to the beach/pool because the idea of anyone seeing me in a swimsuit makes me ill. I’m too scared to do anything! So here I am just looking around the internet for the inspiration to stop being a lazy slob and I found this article. Nice to know that I’m not completely alone!

“You wouldn’t care so much about what people think about you if you realized how much they don’t care.” – I forget where I read that. Probably in FlawlessFitness2. I can really identify with that quote. I don’t give two shits what you do in the gym or why you are there unless you start acting stupid throwing dumbbells or taking up two machines when its crowded; I’m focused on what I need to be doing to achieve my goals.

Well, I can agree to an extent that focusing on why you are in the gym can really help blast away self consciousness. But I think the most empowering thing I realised was that I AIN’T THAT SPECIAL. NOBODY is watching me. I’d argue that about 99.9999% of people are either just as self conscious or so far away from earth, they don’t even notice you.
As Michael says, I really don’t pay attention to what others are doing. Other people are exactly the same. Because of that, there’s no point worrying about what people are thinking of you because NOBODY IS THINKING OF YOU ANYWAY.
